The Awakening

March 2 - 13, 2022

A fresh new year naturally inspires a renewed sense of hope and motivation to realign, we face the future with optimism and resilience.

In this spirit, Saint Cloche is very pleased to bring you ‘The Awakening’ by Melbourne artist, Holly Terry – a body of work inspired by Holly’s journey as a student of yoga, and in particular her studies of Ashtanga yoga. Sanskrit for ‘Eight Limbs’ Ashtanga yoga provides a framework of the practice of yoga, an intricate journey from the external to the internal world of our being.

The practice of yoga is a great tool to liberate the mind and build a foundation of inner fortitude, Holly’s interpretation of this ancient practice through painting, expresses this enduring source of wellbeing.

“A journey to living a meaningful life, ‘The Awakening’ draws together key practices around self-discipline and self-study as a process to reach a blissful state of being, as outlined in the historic text, ‘Yoga Sutras of Patanjali’.

The narrative of ‘The Awakening’ unfolds through a vivid visual representation of practices that move between the physical, external world and the subtle, inner landscape made-up of feeling, thought and emotion that exist within each of us. From practicing non-violence to deep concentration (meditation), it is thought that by following these practices we can reach enlightenment.

Rooted within the voluptuous and organic shapes of ‘The Awakening’ is the key concept that our internal being is deeply connected to the external world, gently flowing together as if one could not exist without the other.”

Characteristic of my work and as all things in life, is the subtle contrast between strength and softness, which play a key role in the conceptualisation of ‘The Awakening’. Using soft, muted palettes, and organic shapes which dance with heavy layering and deep texture, is the exploration of my own personal journey across the practices of yoga in search of a meaningful life.”
